Double Drivel 9-14-10 issue
Mike’s Commentary: The A-C Valley Falcon football team kicked off their 2010 campaign last Friday night against the C-L Lions. The Falcons jumped out quickly to post leads of 13-0 and 19-6. But, after an early high, the mood changed quickly as there was something eerie going on that night. There was a partial blackout and then the fog rolled in. The game was delayed just before halftime. After a prolonged respite, the action resumed and it didn’t take long to realize that the momentum had changed. It soon became clear that the Falcons were not going to be the victors. C-L went on to score the final 26 points of the game for a 32-19 win. And while A-C Valley’s losing streak was extended to 41 games, the kids showed heart and determination even when things turned in C-L’s favor. I think, for the first time in a long time, the A-C Valley football team could hold their heads high.
Dick’s Thoughts- This year the Pirates went to spring training with 4 starting pitchers assured of their jobs and only Charlie Morton and Kevin Hart battling for a spot. After watching this debacle this year I certainly hope NONE of their starting pitchers are assured of their jobs. As I write this the Bucs leading pitcher has 7 wins, the lowest starters ERA is 5.43, and their leading strikeout pitcher is out of the bullpen with 86.
Things can’t much worse for the Big East after week 1. The conference went 4-4 and will certainly need to pick it up or the cries of their BCS bid being removed will be starting.
NFL fans make sure you tune into Survivor Wednesday night to see former Cowboy’s Coach Jimmie Johnson.
What a surprise to see US Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin select Tiger Woods for the team. I can’t imagine the world’s number player being bypassed.
Former Clarion University grad Reggie Wells was recently traded from the Arizona Cardinals to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Thought of the week: Football is a game played with arms, legs, and shoulders but mostly from the neck up.
Dick’s Picks
Redbank @ AC VALLEY: The Falcons put on a fine show against CL, while Redbank surprised me in week 1. AC is getting better and will hang in with the Bulldogs. Redbank 23 AC 12
KARNS CITY @ Wilmington: Maybe the best AA game in Western PA. These 2 teams are 2 of the powerhouses of high school football. KC gets revenge for last years loss. KC 28 Wilmington 27
KEYSTONE @ Clarion Limestone: CL has a nice offense, but a few holes on defense. Keystone will find the holes. Keystone 20 CL 18
Brookville @ MONITEAU: Brookville pulled off a miracle in week 1 while the Warriors were heartbroken. I see a foggy night and Moniteau winning a thriller. MHS 27 Brookville 24
Clarion @ UNION: The Union boys are an emotional roller coaster. Better days are ahead for UHS but not this week. Clarion 27 Union 7
Kent State @ PENN STATE: Joe beats his second powerhouse out of Ohio in this one. I think Kent State is a little better than Youngstown so >>> PSU 70 Kent State 3
STEELERS @ Tennessee: The Steelers D will have their hands full with Vince Young and Chris Johnson. I can’t see this game being much of a delight to passing fans. Kickers rule>>> Tennessee 12 Steelers 9
