The Pirates in their continuing search for talent, may just have came up with an answer to one of their problems.  Denny Hickman of Emlenton pictured with Bill Mazeroski may be getting a September call-up. Denny attended his second Pirate Fantasy Camp this past spring and undoubtedly left an impression. If Charlie Morton can stay on the roster, anything is possible.

Mike’s Commentary: The Pitt Panthers opened up their 2010 football season with a disappointing 27-24 overtime loss to Utah. Pitt quarterback Tino Sunseri led a 4th quarter comeback to erase a 10-point deficit, but Sunseri threw an interception on Pitt’s only possession of overtime that ultimately led to the Utes winning the game. Pitt can be commended for scheduling non-conference foes Utah, Miami and Notre Dame this year, but if Pitt, and the Big East as a conference, are going to excel and gain the respect of their peers, then they are going to have to consistently beat the Utah’s of the college football world.

Dick’s Thoughts: The Pirates continue to amaze.  Back in 1971 the Baltimore Orioles featured a pitching staff with 4 20 game winners.  The Bucs now feature a pitching staff without as much as a 10 game winner, but a staff with 5 10 game losers.
File this in the not hard to believe category…. The Pirates have had 18 consecutive non-winning seasons while the Yankees have had 18 consecutive winning seasons.
The Big 10/11/12 has decided to go with two divisions next year.  PSU, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana , and Illinois will be the one division.  Sue Paterno should be able to lead the Nits to at least a third place finish every year.
Michigan has been in all kinds of trouble with the NCAA for numerous football violations and now West Virginia is in hot water.  One common denominator in both, Coach Rich Rodriguez.
Mercifully the NFL exhibition season is over.  The commissioner is talking about an 18 game regular season come 2012.  For anyone who gets stuck having to go to watch the exhibitions this should come as great news.   Of course going to an 18 game schedule will mean certain milestones might not be milestones.  To gain 1,000 yards rushing you would only need to average 56 yards per game.
Thought of the week:  I got stopped by a cop the other day.  He said, “Why’d you run the stop sign?”  I said, “ Because I don’t believe everything I read.”
Dick’s Picks:
A-C VALLEY @ Punxsutawney:  Very tough game for the locals.  Chucks are one of the KSAC large school division favorites.  Punxsy 41 AC Valley 12
Redbank @ KARNS CITY:  Usually one of the big games in the KSAC.  This year the big will be the margin of victory for the Gremlins.  KC 48 Redbank 6
KEYSTONE @ Brookville:  Small school versus big school.  Keystone rebuilding efforts continue but not to pick up a win.  Brookville 27 Keystone 13
MONITEAU@ Clarion:  Clarion shocked the Warriors last year.  This year not as much of a shock but Clarion win again.  Clarion 20   Moniteau 7
Saegertown @ UNION:  I know where Saegertown is and that is about all.  Let’s think the bus trip wheres them down.  Union 20 Saegertown 19
New Hampshire @ PITT:  Panthers will UNH a big dose of Dion Lewis to get back on track.  With Miami next Pitt has to win this one.  PITT 38 New Hampshire 7
PENN STATE @ Alabama:  This might be the week when Joe remembers his quarterbacks name.  Unfortunately Saban will know his players as well as the Nits.  Alabama might have a little more than YSU.  Alabama 24  PSU 10
Atlanta @ STEELERS:  Game one for the Steelers without Bathroom Stall Ben.  The Steelers will have to depend on the Steel Curtain, that hopefully won’t look like the Rust Curtain of last year.  Steelers D is the difference.  Steelers 10 Falcons 9
