George R. "Bud" Haley
George R. "Bud" Haley, 90, long time Alum Rock resident, passed away at the Golden Living Center in Clarion on November 21, 2011.
Mr. Haley was born June 07, 1921 in Brookville, the only child of James Haley and Martha Thomas Haley. Bud, as everyone knew him, graduated in 1939 from St. Petersburg High School. He was a long time member of the St. Marks U.C.C in Monroe where he enjoyed worshipping with his church family and singing in the choir. Employed for 43 years at the US Corrugated manufacturing facility in Knox, Bud retired in 1984 as the shipping department supervisor.
Mr. Haley was known as a devoted conservationist, natural resource advocate, avid hunter and fly-fishermen, and defender of the Second Amendment. He served as an Associate Director of the Clarion County Conservation District, Board Member of the Pennsylvania Tree Farmers Association, member of Trout Unlimited, and life member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Haley frequently contributed editorial letters to the Derrick advocating the essential liberties embodied by the Second Amendment. In 1979, Bud was awarded Tree Farmer of the Year by the Pennsylvania Tree Farmers Association for outstanding forest stewardship practices on his Tree Farm near Alum Rock. Of particular note, Mr. Haley was known as an accomplished gunsmith and custom rifle builder. Bud was very fond of visiting with his customers and servicing their needs in a gunsmithing career spanning more than fifty years.
A 32 Degree Mason, Mr. Haley was a member of the Canby Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in St. Petersburg, the Oil City Lodge of Perfection, and the New Castle Consistory of AASR.
Bud was married on July 27, 1985 to the former Jane L. Neely of Knox. The Haleys enjoyed time spent with family and friends, exploring nature in Pennsylvania's great outdoors, and the freedom of retirement.
Mr. Haley is survived by his wife Jane and step-sons, Edward B. Neely of Knox and James B. Neely and his wife Faye of Fairbanks, Alaska.
The family asks that Bud be remembered through support of the values he dedicated his life to: faith in God, love of family, wise stewardship of His creation, and dedication to freedom.
Friends were received at the Hile Funeral Home Inc., 802 Grove St., St. Petersburg, PA. Funeral services were held from the funeral home with Rev. Dan Myers, pastor of Mt. Joy United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in St. Petersburg Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.hilefh.com.
