A Message from Martinsburg

AUTHENTIC WORSHIP

By Rev. Larry Thompson, Pastor

Over the next several weeks, I will be sharing with you the eight spiritual values that form the core of ministry at Martinsburg Church of Bruin. Last week, I shared with you our first “value,” Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Today, I will spend some time on our second “value,” Authentic Worship.

Authentic worship begins when we, as individuals and members of our local churches, totally surrender ourselves to the sovereignty and holiness of Almighty God. We begin this journey by presenting our physical bodies as living sacrifices; holy, acceptable unto God (Rom.12:1).

When the Jewish people offered sacrifices of animal, grain, fowl, etc., they offered sacrifices that were outside of themselves. As believers (Jewish and Gentile alike), we are called to a much higher and nobler purpose. Instead of offering a sacrifice that is outside of ourselves, we are called by God to offer our own bodies as living, holy and acceptable sacrifices to Him. By doing so, we manifest to God our “reasonable service” (Rom.12:1).

We must understand that our bodies are temples of God’s Holy Spirit. God is living in us (Eph.4:30)! We must keep His temple (our sacrifice) pure and clean before Him. It is God’s will that we sanctify (set aside) our bodies for Him and keep them spiritually and morally clean. We are not to be conformed to the ways of this world, but transformed by the renewing of our minds, in order to “prove” (demonstrate/manifest) the good, acceptable, and perfect (complete) will of God (Rom.12:2; Acts 15:20).

In order to authentically worship God, we must throw off the wisdom of man (this world) and pursue the true and perfect wisdom of God. We must begin to see things from God’s point of view and pursue a life and lifestyle dedicated to God and God alone (Eph.4:21-32). This is the sovereign and perfect will of Almighty God for His children and His local churches.

We are to offer to God bodies that are free from sexual immorality and spiritual compromise. We are to offer to Him lives that have been transformed away from the lusts and pursuits of this world, unto lives and lifestyles that give glory to Him. This is the good, acceptable and perfect will of God for His Creation and especially for those who are the household of the faith.

May we forever desire to acknowledge God’s supreme value and worth in our personal lives and in the corporate and “authentic” worship of our local churches.

Thank You and God bless.
