Local Boys Scouts, Legion Hold Flagpole Dedication Ceremony

Members of three local civic organizations gathered at Chicora Hardware on Sunday, November 12th to dedicate the business’s recently erected flagpole and honor our country’s veterans. The occasion was marked with a flag raising ceremony by a color guard composed of members from all three groups; Boy Scout Troop 217, Cub Scout Pack 217, and American Legion Post 642, all of Chicora.

As our flag rose above, Boy Scout Bugler Andrew Serafine played a rousing rendition of “To The Colors”, a fast-paced call often used to honor our nation’s standard. Local vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Charliese Roudybush instilled a sense of patriotism in the assemblage with her performance of our National Anthem, and the American Legion rifle squad performed a rifle salute to honor our nation’s fallen soldiers and sailors.

Scout Parker Page performed the reading of a poem, “Our Flag” penned by Margaret E. Sangster, and the proceedings closed with a few words from Scoutmaster Evan Peterson.

“We hereby dedicate this flagpole to the citizens of Chicora, to the State of Pennsylvania, and to our great nation, the United States of America. Long may the colors unfurl from its heights over our community, reminding us each day of those who have fought for our freedom to display it. It shall stand straight as a reminder of our duty to stand for our country, and long remain sturdy as does our dedication to her ideals. And finally, as the flag is lowered each day from its lofty heights, may we remember those who have fallen in defense of those ideals; our freedom’s martyrs, and saviors of our way of life.”
