Martinsburg Church of Bruin Installs New Pastor

Reverend Larry Thompson

Reverend Larry Thompson was recently installed as the Pastor of the Martinsburg Church of Bruin during the morning worship service on Sunday, December 6. The church is an independent Bible believing community located at 128 Main Street in Bruin. Pastor Thompson has served as the Church’s interim pastor since July. The installation service was officiated by Rev. Theo Edwards, a long-time friend and member of First Baptist Church of Butler.

Pastor Thompson heard a call to preach the gospel in 1967, at the age of fourteen, but did not yield to the Lord’s calling until many years later. Following their marriage in April 1980, he and his wife, Darcy, began attending and ultimately joined the First Baptist Church of Butler.

In April 2001, he met with the pastor and deacons of First Baptist and shared his calling with them. The rest is history. He preached his first sermon on June 23, 2002, at Bible Baptist Church in Brownsville, PA. On September 4, 2004, Pastor Thompson was licensed to preach by First Baptist Church of Butler and was Ordained to the work of the Gospel Ministry by the same Church on October 28, 2018.

For over eighteen years, Pastor Thompson and Darcy have travelled to churches throughout western Pennsylvania where he ministered primarily in the areas of preaching and teaching. He served as Pastor of Mt. Pleasant Independent Baptist Church in Corsica, PA for seven months in 2017, before returning to First Baptist in Butler where he and Darcy helped with the Senior Visitation ministry. They also conducted Church Services and Bible Studies at New Haven Court and Alameda Gardens in Butler until the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic earlier this year.

“Darcy and I have grown to truly love the people here at Martinsburg Church,” Pastor Thompson says. “There is a good spirit here. With much prayer and an easy going and loving approach, much can be accomplished.”

Since July, the church has “rebooted” the Adult Sunday School Class and started a Wednesday evening Bible Study and Prayer Time at 6:30 P.M. “Everyone is welcome at any of our services,” says Pastor Thompson, “Sunday School is at 9:45 A.M. and our Sunday morning worship service is at 11:00 A.M.”

At its annual meeting on Sunday, November 15, the Church elected three new Elders and a new Treasurer. The Church also observed a Thanksgiving Eve Service on November 25. Pastor Thompson sums things up in this way, “Loving the People and Preaching the Word; this is what God appreciates and this is what Martinsburg Church of Bruin is all about. Everyone is welcome here at Martinsburg Church. Please come and visit with us!”
