Perry Township Historical Society is continuing with its plans for “Civil War Experience” to be held at Wetzel Park in West Freedom on Saturday, September 19, from 1:30 to 6 PM.
Sally Reed, spokesperson for the board of directors, said, “This is an outdoor event. People will come and go. We do not anticipate a large crowd at any one time. People will be expected to police themselves regarding COVID. But we also realize that as things change we may have to cancel the event.”
An opening ceremony will be held at 1:30 PM honoring the township men who died in the war, including those who perished at Andersonville prison.
The event will be educational as well as entertaining with blacksmith and story teller, Denny Murray; Co C, 2'” US Sharpshooter Von Rhoades; the 105th Wildcat Regiment, and portrayals of characters associated with the war by Kay Caldwell, Brittney Reed, Judy Rawson, Randy Bartley and Jody Frazier. The township’s participation in the Underground Railroad will be highlighted.
A chicken dinner will be available for purchase as well as souvenirs of the day. Several $1 rafûes will be held.
A donation of $1 per person over the age of 5 is requested at the gate to help defray costs. West Freedom is on Rt. 368 between Callensburg and Parker. Questions can be directed to Sally Reed at 814-782-3918.
