Sports Talk with Mike - 3-3-20

The District IX playoffs have continued over the past week with the A-C Valley boys defeating Johnsonburg in the quarterfinals and losing to Elk County Catholic in the semifinals. The Falcons played in the Boys’ “A” consolation game on Saturday against C-L and will compete in the 1st round of the PIAA playoff on Friday, March 6th. After receiving a 1st round bye, the “AA” 2nd seeded Keystone Panthers lost to Clarion in the District semi-finals. The Panthers played in the consolation game on Saturday, and, if victorious will play in the 1st round of the PIAA playoffs on Saturday, March 7th against the 2nd place team from District 10.

The Keystone girls defeated Cranberry in the 1st round of the playoffs and beat #1-seed, Ridgway, in the semifinals. The Lady Panthers took on Redbank in the “AA” final on Saturday, and, dependent on the result of that game, will play either the #3 or #4 team from District 10 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Friday, March 6th.  The Moniteau girls played Brookville on Saturday in the District IX “AAA” title game. The winner of that game will take on 6th place team out of the WPIAL in the 1st round of the PIAA playoff on Friday, March 6th.

A scheduling irregularity, of sorts, placed the senior members of the A-C Valley boys’ basketball team in a no-win situation. They were slated to compete in the District IX Class A consolation game on Saturday, February 29th at noon. Also, the bus pulled out from the school at 6:30pm on Thursday and transported members of the Senior Class to the airport for their Thursday through Sunday, February 27 – March 2, senior trip to Florida. So, therein lies the dilemma. Being a sports coach and parent for a lot of years, I try to preach teamwork at all times. But, this is a rare situation and I understand the economics of it as well. The seniors had their trip paid for already and to throw away that much money to compete in a basketball game would be a hard pill to swallow. I’m not sure if there are any rights or any wrongs in this situation. I’m not sure that there is anyone to blame for the scheduling snafu.  I just feel really bad for anyone that has been affected by this predicament. Both are sort of once in a lifetime events and to have to miss one of them is a bummer.
