The Travels Along the Buffalo Project was initiated in the spring of 2023. This project focuses on the Buffalo Creek drainage in Butler and Armstrong Counties. The purpose of the project is community outreach to involve the local citizens in developing a comprehensive history of the Native American populations within the drainage. A series of presentations have been held in a variety of local communities and to date the turnout and interest has been high.
Support has been given by both the Freeport and Worthington Communities, which has helped immensely in getting the word out within those communities and distribution of the publication. To date distribution in the Chicora area has been sparse due to the lack of a historical society or community library in the Chicora area.
The “Travels Along the Buffalo” publication was distributed to all local school districts within the watershed, the Buffalo Creek Watershed Coalition, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Com mission, Heinz History Center, all public libraries within the watershed, and several contributing / consulting individuals. Copies should be available for review at the local public libraries.
If you or anyone you know has knowledge of the Buffalo Creek drainage and would like to share or be involved in the project, please contact me, Tom Rabbitt, at trabbitt@centurylink.net.
This is a non-profit initiative with the cost of the book is set at $30.00 to defray the cost of printing. Taxes were paid at the time of publication and are included in the cost. Copies may be obtained via the above noted email address and at the Worthington / West Franklin and Freeport Area Community Libraries. Shipping is $5.00 if ordering via email. Thank you.
