2025 Christmas Blessing from Bishop Lawrence Persico and the Diocese of Erie

ree

This Christmas I found myself reflecting on how clearly the Holy Spirit was at work in the Diocese of Erie. During the “Jubilee of Hope”, we were invited to trust more deeply in God’s mercy. And throughout our diocese, we have seen that hope alive. We celebrated the ordination of two priests and welcomed three others in their first pastors where they are already serving with dedication. Throughout the year, countless parishioners deepened their faith through the sacraments.

Many pilgrims traveled to Italy, crossing the holy doors and carrying your prayers with them. While many others made their pilgrimage here at home across Northwest Pennsylvania, several parishes, schools, and ministries marked more than a century of service, beautiful signs of God’s continued care.

This year also invites us to look at the universal church. As we welcome Pope Leo as our new holy father, we entered a moment filled with possibility. His emphasis on unity and missionary discipleship encourages us to live the gospel with renewed purpose.

As I reflect on 13 years as your bishop, I am grateful for the privilege of walking with you. We have shared moments of joy and faced challenges. But through it all, God has remained faithful. And you, the people of this diocese, are its greatest strength. This Christmas, we remember that Christ continues to enter our world with hope that never fades. The prophet Isaiah gives us a beautiful reminder. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” (Isaiah 9:2)

My prayer for each of you is simple. May his peace fill your homes. May his strength uphold those who are struggling and may his joy take root in every heart. May God bless you and may the light of Christ be with you this Christmas and always.
