Seneca Rocks Audubon is on a mission to promote bird-friendly habitat in backyards by relaunching their Bird-Friendly Habitat recognition program. The recognition program encourages home-owners, schools, and businesses to provide food, shelter, and water for birds through various means on their property.

A colorful yard sign is available for those who apply and meet simple criteria.

Habitat loss has contributed to the loss of almost 3 billion birds since 1970. Improving backyard habitat can help to slow this trend.

The group especially encourages the use of native plants as they can provide both shelter and food for the birds.

Native plants are plants such as flowers, shrubs, and trees which were in Pennsylvania before European settlement. Through shared evolution, they have close relationships with birds and insects. As a result, many insects prefer or need native plants for their lifecycle. In turn, many birds depend upon insects for food especially for their babies. Over 90% of land birds feed insects to their young. Native plants also provide nutritious seeds and berries to resident and migrating birds.

More information about native plants is on the Seneca Rocks Audubon website, senecarocksaudubon.org, under Bird-Friendly Habitat in the Conservation section.

The application for recognition as a bird-friendly habitat is also on the website. The application lists the simple criteria that are required and also contains QR codes for further information. The successful applicant will receive a colorful 10”x14” aluminum yard sign for a $20 donation to Seneca Rocks Audubon.

Interested persons are welcome to contact Seneca Rocks Audubon for more information or a Bird-Friendly Habitat application by emailing senecarocksaudubon@gmail.com.
