Catherine A. “Cassie” Best, 79 of Shippenville, formerly of Emlenton and Foxburg went to be with the Lord, Monday afternoon May 26, 2025, while in the company of her loving family at UPMC Shadyside in Pittsburgh.
Catherine was born in Lucinda on July 6, 1945. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence “Doc” and Mary Dietz Schill. She was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic School in Lucinda. Cassie was a devoted and loving homemaker and enjoyed working outside and meticulously mowing her lawn. She was affectionately called, “Grandma Cassie” by her grand kids and great-grand kids, who were the light of her life. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, playing cards, puzzles, and BINGO. Cassie was a long-time and faithful member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Emlenton and was a member of the church’s Alter Rosary Society. In her later years, Cassie had been employed at the Community Daycare in Emlenton where she loved and cared for many children.
Catherine is survived by her husband George W. Best Sr., whom she married at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Lucinda on March 13, 1965. Also surviving are her children, Mark E. Best of Shippenville, Stephen A. Best of East Brady, Karen A. Kellerman and her husband Ricky of Emlenton and Susan M. Ross and her husband Shawn of Franklin; her grandchildren: Cheyenne, Joseph, Michael, Robert, Garrett, Kelly, Brittany, Mathew, Kiley, MacKenna, and Dallas; her great-grandchildren: Alexis, Emmalynn, Alessia, Dylan, Ariella, Mason, Forrest, Casen, Dylan, Maria, Gage, Kaylob, Bradley, Annabelle, Georgia, Joseph, Charity, and Echo. Three sisters survive, Rita Schiffer of Franklin, Marge Wolbert of Lucinda, and Nancy Schill of Erie, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, a brother-in-law, and a sister-in-law.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son George Best, Jr., as well as several brothers and sisters.
Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home, Inc. in Emlenton from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2025. The Alter Rosary Society of St. Michael Church will lead the rosary at 7:45 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2025, from St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church 807 Chestnut St. Emlenton with the Very Rev. David Foradori, church pastor, officiating. The interment will be in Cedarview Memorial Park in Strattanville.
