Kids Innovation Playground Introduces Robotics Hummingbird BIT Program at Boys & Girls Club Along The Allegheny

Thanks to a grant from the Philips Trust the Boys and Girls Along The Allegheny has been able to offer members a new program at the club.

Last week , Lorraine Shaeffer of Kids Innovation Playground introduced the Robotics Hummingbird kits as an introductory course to members of the club.

Lorraine was assisted by Americorps member Andrea Meals and Tyler Rapp who is pursuing his Engineering degree at the University of Pittsburgh.

Kids Innovation Playground was founded by Lorraine Shaffer who is a retired elementary school teacher. Kids Innovation Playground is a 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to bridge the educational gap in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) experiences for children Pre-K to 8th grade in rural western PA.

Students were introduced to Birdbrain Technologies Hummingbird Bit where they programed single and tri LED lights, positional and rotational serve motors, and sensors, using the block coding program Make Code. These components were designed into various arts and crafts to automate and animate their projects.

Participating in the three day class were Lucas Hunt, Donnie Raas, Emme Gagliano, Kya Pedi, Archer Pedi and David Letzelter, who all were awarded a certificate of achievement.

The Boys and Girls Club will continue to offer this program throughout the school year. Any kid between the ages of 8 to 12 years of age who would like to get involved is asked to contact Brad at 724-332-9604. You do not have to be a member of the Boys and Girls Club to enroll in the program.

If you are a student who has experience in Robotics and would like to help in anway please let us know. We are in the process of putting some classes together this fall.

Many of the skills learned are the building block for those interested in science, technology, engineering and math. Anyone interested in seeing what it is all about can go to www.kidsinnovationplayground.com or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmg8uLYavOc&t=14s
