Perry Township Historical Society

The Perry Township Historical Society will take part in the Township’s Community Days on Saturday, September 9th, at both the West Freedom Park and at the old two-room school. The school and museum will be open from 10 until 5 for browsing. Kay Caldwell will be on hand periodically to talk about the school and answer questions.

At the park, there will be a display of old items for the public to identify and books for sale. New this year is “The Life and Times of Rodney Barger”. Barger, an avid lifetime hunter, has shared his stories and photos for a publication that is both enjoyable and makes a great gift. He will be on hand to answer questions and visit with old friends. Also new is an on-going project, “Perry Township Residents Hall of Fame.” Included are such people as Roy Abernethy, born and raised in West Monterey, who became CEO of American Motors, and Virginia Biddle Henderson, also of West Monterey, who authored a children’s book at age 100.

Anyone who has made the difficult trek to the petroglyphs will want to order a tee-shirt that says “I survived a trip to the Petroglyphs” or with just an image of the petroglyphs panther.

Also on display will be another on-going project of collection of genealogy information for Perry Township families. To date, more than 225 families are included.

Winner of photo contest, “The Abandoned”, will be announced at approximately 5:45 at the park. A professional photographer will chose two blue ribbon winners and the public will vote for their favorite throughout the day. Deadline for the photo contest is August 26 and details are available on the Society’s Facebook page.
