Sonja Ann Shoup, 85, a lifelong St. Petersburg resident, passed away in the company of her loving husband Sunday morning, August 24, 2025, at UPMC Hamot in Erie following complications from lung disease.
Sonja was born in St. Petersburg on February 7, 1940. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Logue Master.
She was a 1958 graduate of Allegheny Clarion Valley Joint Schools and a 1961 graduate of Clarion State Teachers College, having earned a BS in secondary education. Mrs. Shoup was a well-beloved English teacher at Allegheny Clarion Valley School District for thirty-three years. She was well-respected among the district's staff, students, and parents. Sonja had been a long-time member of the former St. Peter Lutheran Church in St. Petersburg and was currently a member of the Salem Lutheran Church. Sonja looked forward to the company of family and friends. Following her retirement, she and her husband enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida.
Sonja is survived by her husband, Donald Dean Shoup, whom she married on January 28, 1961. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law, cousins, and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Frances “Fran” Fair, Kate Kannonchoff, and Betty “Toot” Baum, as well as several brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.
Private funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hile Funeral Home of St. Petersburg.
