What is World Turtle Day?

World Turtle Day is observed every year on May 23 to celebrate turtles and tortoises and promote their conservation. It was founded in 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and protecting these ancient reptiles.

Turtles have existed for over 220 million years, yet many species now face serious threats including habitat loss, pollution, climate change, road deaths, and the illegal pet trade. The day highlights these issues and encourages global action during peak nesting season in the Northern Hemisphere.

People participate by learning about turtle biology, visiting rescue centers, supporting wildlife protections, reducing plastic use, and sharing stories online. What started as a small initiative now reaches over 190 countries.
