Clarion County Veterans Turn Out for Annual Picnic

PAINT TWP. – Approximately 150 veterans of military service turned out for the annual Clarion County Veterans Picnic Aug. 15 at Clarion County Park in Paint Township.
Those veterans brought along 76 guests and everyone enjoyed a midday picnic lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs and an array of picnic-style side dishes and desserts.
The entire meal, entertainment and more than $900 in gift card drawings was paid for entirely with donations from local businesses, clubs and individuals. The use of the large pavilion was through the courtesy of the Clarion County Board of Commissioners.
“If you look at the number of attendees, it’s almost identical to last year,” said Clarion County Director of Veteran Affairs Rodney L. Sherman. “If we consider the nearly 90 Clarion County veterans who have passed away since our last picnic, we can see the number of younger veterans coming out for the picnic is increasing.”
Sherman noted several of the younger veterans brought their families – including children – to the event.
“With the large playground right next to the big picnic pavilion, the younger kids seemed to have a good time, as well,” said Sherman.
Two World War II veterans attended the picnic. Walter N. Early Jr., 99, of East Brady, a merchant marine veteran, and Dean W. Lewis, 98, of the Knox area, a Navy veteran, stood and were recognized at the picnic gathering.
“This was an opportunity for veterans of all ages, all eras and branches to spend a few hours with their brothers and sisters in arms, share some experiences and tell a few stories,” said Sherman. “And there were some stories told here. These veterans have seen and made a lot of history.”
The meal was catered by the Clarion VFW post. D.J. services were by Joe Bonono. The Meadows Original Frozen Custard of Clarion served up dessert.
Sherman commended all of the people who contributed to the event, including Clarion County Park workers who kept everything in good order.
“We had a great turn-out, great support and service and great weather,” said Sherman.
