Fred E. Greenawalt, 89, of Chicora, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, October 15, 2026, at the home of his daughter in Harrisville.

Fred was born on February 26, 1937, in Kaylor to the late William Greenawalt and Margaret Lightcap Greenawalt Wagner.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Wilda L. "Tillie" Groves Greenawalt, who passed away on February 23, 2024. The couple was married at St. Paul Church in Sugarcreek Twp. on June 27, 1959. Together, they had three children: Dale Greenawalt and his wife, Rina of Renfrew; Mark Greenawalt and his wife, Lisa; and Linda McCord and her husband, Lee, all of Harrisville.

Fred was a 1955 graduate of Fairview Twp. Karns City High School and served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1955 to 1963. He served his community as a Boy Scout leader.

He was a long-time active member of the Chicora United Methodist Church. Fred served the church as an usher and Sunday School Teacher, and in various other offices and committees throughout the years.

Fred worked his entire career, beginning in 1955 at Castle Rubber Co. in East Butler. He retired in February 2001 as a Press Operator and Fork Truck Driver. After his retirement, Fred looked forward to spending time with his family. He and Wilda traveled every year to visit family out west. Their journeys covered the entire USA, visiting every state except Alaska and Hawaii. Fred was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and NASCAR fan. His favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. On any given Sunday, you could find him sitting in his favorite chair watching a race or a football game. When he was not watching a race or football game, he could be found working on his puzzles or playing with his train set. It was a given that while purchasing souvenirs while on vacation, he would get a new shot glass for his collection on his train set.

Fred was affectionately “Pap or Pappy” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. From his first granddaughter to his newest great-grandson, he enjoyed spending time building forts on the living room floor, listening to music on his old record player, pushing them on the swing set, or capturing every moment on his video recorder. He never missed a moment to spend time with his family.

In addition to his children, Fred is survived by six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, his brothers, Jack Greenawalt and his wife, Lorrie and Larry Wagner and his wife, Merry; his sisters, Shirley Oesterling and her husband, Cliff, Beverly Olenic and her husband, William, Janet McDonald and Debbie Wagner; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Groves; a sister-in-law, Carol Groves, and several nieces, nephews, cousins.

In addition to his wife and parents, Fred was preceded in death by three brothers, Harvey Greenawalt, William Greenawalt, and David Greenawalt, as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Rd., Chicora, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2026, and from Noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026.
