On Sunny Lane: Check It Out

Sweetheart and I have been planning a trip to Myrtle Beach for quite some time and now it is beginning to come to fruition.

Oh, I know what you’re thinking. You think we’re going to loll on the beach and soak up the sun. Well, you would be wrong. I’m sure we will hit the beach while we’re in the neighborhood. However, we will be spending our time with our nephew and his family.

Actually, he is not our nephew. In fact, he is not related to us at all—except by love. You see, my brother had a stepson who was married to a woman from Colombia, South America. (She is now an American citizen, in case you were wondering.) Well, my brother’s stepson and his wife got divorced and his ex-wife met another man and they became engaged. The new fiance! latched on to us as family, since he had none here.

The two of them used to live 40 miles away from us. Since my “nephew” is originally from California and she is originally from Colombia, they decided to leave Pennsylvania and its varying climate to one that is warmer. Hence, their relocation to South Carolina. They just happen to live 20-30 miles away from Myrtle Beach.

Trouble is we had to alter our travel plans. Our “nephew” told us about this great deal in which we could get a direct air flight from Arnold Palmer Airport in Latrobe to Myrtle Beach. Trouble is we booked the flight on Spirit Airlines, which is now defunct.

We were following the news on the various networks to discover just what Spirit’s plans might be for its customers. We learned that they would be refunding the money that ticket holders had paid. So, we will sit tight and wait for that to happen for us. In the meantime, Sweetheart and I had to find an alternate mode of transportation to reach our destination.

First, though, I wanted to check out Arnold Palmer Airport to see if another airline might be quartered there and could make the same offer that Spirit had made. Sweetheart thought I was foolish for calling, because he had heard on the news that there was none. In fact, I could hear him snickering in the background as I talked.

I thought there was a slim chance that the airport management could have another airline in place that would take over that route. The agent said that, indeed, they were working on that very issue, but would not have it in place by the time we wanted to make our trip. So, we are going to drive there. We know that the price of gas is sky high at this time, but it will probably not be more than the price of airline tickets.

Now, you probably wonder why I would want to call the airport to ask about a replacement airline, when it had already been broadcast on TV that there was none. I just like to go by the words of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, “Trust, but verify.” If possible, I like to get the words, “from the horse’s mouth..”

There is too much hearsay in the world today. There are too many rumors being spread. Too many people accept as fact information that has not been verified. People are not “stepping outside their box” to find alternate sources of news that may be outside their usual viewpoint.

I believe we need to get information from many different sources—even those we don’t agree with. How else can we bring about the harmony among citizens that our country so badly needs at this time?
