On Sunny Lane: Let There Be Peace on Earth

Ten years ago, when the new President of the United States was elected. I began to get news of chaos occurring in Washington, D.C.

I began to pray for issues to be resolved and for peace to reign. I sang the song, “Let There Be Peace on Earth” every day. However, the second line of that song is, “And let it begin with me.” Those words convicted me.

I believed that I needed to do my part to bring peace, but I didn’t know how. I have always been a writer, so I decided that having a column in the newspaper would be a good way to spread peace and good will. Even so, it took more than six months of nudging from the Holy Spirit before I wrote my first story.

I have always endeavored to keep my stories positive and full of inspiration and encouragement. Letters, emails from readers and comments from people on the street indicate that I have achieved that goal for many people. As it goes for Washington, D.C, that goal may never be reached. 

At times, readers have brought to my attention inaccuracies in the information I presented. Where I agreed with their assessment, I addressed it in ensuing columns.

In some cases, I may have offended someone by an offhand statement. It was never my intention to offend anyone, as peace has always been my goal. Some of you have laughed with me and some of you have laughed at me.

Lately, it has been a struggle for me to come up with new ideas and, I believe, I have fulfilled my mission. Sitting down each week is no longer a pleasurable experience. The same Holy Spirit who nudged me to begin my work is nudging me to end it. And that is what I am doing today. 

I will find other ways to spread peace and love and pray that you will do the same. Let your light shine, just as it says in Luke 11:33-35. Paraphrasing it, No one lights a lamp and hides it under a barrel, but puts it on a lamp stand for all to see. 

More people need to do that.

P.S. Now I hope to begin work on my next book, compiling columns I have written in the last three years.
