On Sunny Lane: Goodness Also Exists

Unless I am mistaken, evil has always existed in the world and, most likely, will continue. Of course, good also exists.
Now, what I consider to be evil is intentionally harming another person--or advocating harm to another person--or rejoicing in harm that is done to another person. On the other hand, I believe that love consists of wanting only the best for other people.
But, where do these two entities originate? I believe they originate at birth--or, even in the womb. Does the baby come into the world to a loving mother and father? Do the parents continue to express love, even amidst trials that may beset them? Do they teach their children what is acceptable behavior? Do they explain what is socially acceptable and what is not?
Hopefully, the child attends a school where s/he is given positive direction and is not subjected to verbal, mental or physical abuse from teachers or peers. Or, maybe, the child has been given the tools to withstand any evil that is hurled against him/her.
Social media is a tremendous influence in the lives of young people. Even a person who has been raised in a positive environment can be influenced negatively by evil people and entities online. AI can be a source for evil, as well as good.
There are always people who want to influence another person’s thinking or beliefs. Subscribing to my definition of good and evil, what method does the person use to try to convert you? Throwing rocks and burning buildings only leads to more violence. Sometimes it just makes people stick more firmly to their convictions--or even intensify them.
Ultimately, good and evil begin in the heart--where love and hatred reside.
Our country is in an internal battle these days. A lot of people believe the fight is political, but it is not. It’s between good and evil, love and hatred. We cannot use hatred to push evil out. Violence cannot cast out evil.
Only by wishing the best for other people--even people we dislike--can we strike a blow for peace. Surely, everyone wants peace.
And, sometime during our sojourn on this earth, we must come to the realization that there is more to life than what meets the eye and that we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among them are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
