On Sunny Lane: Just Be Your Best

ree

I have several pairs of old blue jeans that have holes in the knees.

I have wondered how that happened to otherwise good jeans, as I don’t do the kind of vigorous work that would cause that to happen. And, some people have said it’s because I spend a lot of time on my knees (in prayer). Although the amount of time I spend in prayer is debatable, I don’t usually do it on my knees. After all, if I get on my knees, it’s too hard to get back up. I think God understands.

I have come to the conclusion--and I may be wrong--that the knees of my pants wear out from the inside. The amount of walking I do, added to the bending, stooping and stretching, is bound to make the material wear thin in vulnerable places, due to the friction that it must bear.

However, the jeans are still useful for working around the house. And, now that there are no knees in the cloth, my own knees are able to move about freely.

Now, I have spoken to people who have holes in their jeans, holes that were purchased along with the trousers. I ask them if their legs get cold because of the aeration provided by the openings. They tell me they do not, but I have found the opposite to be true. Maybe, I just wear my pants more loosely than they do.

On the other hand, as for praying on my knees, I have found that I can pray just as well no matter what position I am in--sitting still or being active. What I have a problem with is keeping my mind on what I am praying about. Sweetheart wonders why we close our eyes when we pray. Nobody ever told me this, but I believe the reason is to shut out distractions.

However, try as I may, I cannot keep out the distractions from within my own mind. If I want to pray for world peace, my mind wanders over to what I am going to fix for supper. If I pray for good health for a friend, before I know it, I am thinking about what I need to put on the shopping list.

I can’t find it now, but I know there is a passage in the Bible stating that the tongue is a small member of the body, but can cause great damage. It says we should tame the tongue and bring it under control. However, how can we bring our tongue under control if we don’t control our mind first? Maybe, the damage begins in our mind, not in our tongue. It certainly is a dilemma.

I guess we just need to get it all together. Whether we are sitting or standing; being active or idle; praying or just thinking; we can just be the best we can be. And let the blue jeans take care of themselves.
