On Sunny Lane: Let’s Reverse Course

Sweetheart and I like to watch Forensic Files on television in the evenings, before we go to bed.

Before going to bed is probably not the best time to watch a program that focuses on violent crime and the methods that go into solving them. However, we like to see the methods that go into solving the mysteries and that is when the program is on television.

It turns out that, in many cases, it is the spouse who commits the murder. I say to Sweetheart, “How can two people who profess, in front of family and friends, to love each other until death do they part, grow to hate each other so much that one would resort to murder?”

Sweetheart says the reason one or the other of them would do such a thing is so he or she can collect a large amount of life insurance. I maintain that no amount of money can take the place of loving arms to keep a person warm on a cold winter night. Although, sometimes, a spouse has already found other loving arms and that is the reason for the murder. Although, who would want to be in a relationship with someone who has just terminated her/his spouse?

I was expressing this thought to my massage therapist last week as she was working on my back. As I was trying to make some sense of the whole matter, she came to the conclusion that some people are just plain evil. It made me shudder to think of it. How do we know the evil that is lurking in another person’s heart?

Why would someone want to harm or kill their spouse? or someone they love? or anyone? Evil has to enter their heart at some point.

It could just be that some people love themselves so much that there is no room for someone to stand in the way of what they want.

I wonder what would happen if those people would turn their attitude around, instead of being self-centered. I knew a fellow who had a sign up at his place of business. It read, “God first. Others second. Myself last.”

It seemed to work for him. It might work for everybody. People wouldn’t need to harm another person in order to have their needs met.

That scenario might put an end to TV programs such as Forensic Files, but I think we could handle it.
