On Sunny Lane: This Too Shall Pass

Last weekend was the weekend of the BIG SNOW that had been predicted for the last two weeks.
Sweetheart and I didn't care. Everybody on the weather news told us to stay off the roads, stay safe, and "hunker down." We had nowhere to go and nothing important to do. Church was canceled on Sunday; my eye doctor appointment and the dance were canceled for Monday, and we had nothing scheduled for Tuesday.
Eventually, though, we felt that, once the snow had stopped snowing, we should remove some of it--especially from the walk and the parking area. Sweetheart's philosophy is, "God put it there. God can pick it up." However, in this case, he thought God was going to take His good old time, and we didn't want to wait until spring.
Before we got started, I decided to measure the snow, so I would know just how much we had gotten. Eighteen inches had been forecast, and it sure looked like it to me as I gazed out of the mud room door. However, even though I measured in five different areas, the measurement "only" came up to twelve inches. It seemed like a lot more, as it came up over my snow boots and halfway up to my knees.
Now, I had my cell phone in my pocket, so I could count my steps as I shoveled snow. It so happens that I am part of a group text. Everybody was texting every few minutes, complaining (or boasting) about how many inches of snow they had. Some said they had gotten 18 or 20 inches. Personally, I don't think everyone measured it.
All of the people I know were in the same situation as Sweetheart and me, so when we weren't shoveling, we kept in touch with them by text and telephone. A funny thing happened. Each one of them told me about a relative, a friend, or a neighbor who had helped them to shovel or plow their driveway or lane.
Although there were no major catastrophes like you see on television, people pitched in to help their senior citizen neighbors. It's nice to know there's someone who is willing to help when it's needed.
I'm glad the BIG SNOW is over. In the meantime, snow or no snow, we are one day closer to spring.
