On Sunny Lane: To See or Not To See

After cruising through the lighted Christmas display at the local park, I was inspired to lay out a display of my own along the lane leading up to our house.
Of course the display is not entirely lighted, because we have only one electrical power source and that is in the house. I didn’t think it was wise or practical to spread out extension cords throughout the yard.
However, Sweetheart and I have set up a silhouetted manger scene at the bottom of the lane and another one along the walk leading up to the house.
I ransacked the house and storage barn for decorations that would be suitable for outside. I was coming up short, so I got a few more at the thrift stores. So, we put up Santas and snowmen, two sleds on which we put scarecrows wearing Santa hats and a few other festive accoutrements. The only thing it lacked was lights.
So, Sweetheart and I bought some solar-powered strings of lights, with which we festooned some of the trees and bushes along the drive. The only thing lacking now was the sun’s rays with which to power the lights. Of course, we do get some sunshine at this time of year, but, mostly, the days are cloudy and gray.
As a result, sometimes our trees are awash with color and sometimes they are not. Sometimes we see them shine for an hour or two and then the color disappears. It all depends on how much they have been energized by the sun during the day.
It’s a small price to pay for the convenience of having a yard that is extension cord-free, yet does the job. Besides, it’s not like we live along a main thoroughfare, where thousands of motorists will see—or not see—our display. And, if Sweetheart and I are out for the evening, we are the only people who will see—or not see—the lights. Occasionally, we will have guests who see them—or not see them—as they come up the driveway.
Yes, the sun is a powerful energy source if it is harnessed properly and if that big, yellow orb is amenable to being harnessed. I’m just glad I don’t need to power my house with it.
