Community volunteers are making a lasting difference in East Brady by transforming a section of the Armstrong Trail and the Fuhrer Parklet into cleaner, safer, and more welcoming spaces for residents and visitors.

This spring, as a part of a PA Wilds Community Engagement Grant, the East Brady Area Development Corporation (EBADC) organized several volunteer workdays to improve these valued community assets. In early May, volunteers trimmed trees, planted perennial flowers, and spread mulch at the Fuhrer Parklet. Since then, juvenile probation work crews have continued maintaining the parklet with biweekly mowing, weeding, and litter removal, helping to keep the area attractive throughout the summer.

On June 26, nine adult volunteers spent the day removing overgrown vegetation along the Armstrong Trail fence line using string trimmers, sweeping debris from the trail, and trimming overhanging branches to improve both safety and accessibility. Just days later, on July 2, members of Boy Scout Troop 217 planted additional perennials and spread mulch at the trailhead on Purdum Street. The Scouts also repaired the surface surrounding a memorial bench and cleared additional overgrowth along the trail.

These volunteer efforts, combined with ongoing maintenance, have significantly enhanced two of East Brady’s most enjoyed recreational spaces. Walkers, cyclists, all residents and visitors can now enjoy a cleaner, more inviting environment that reflects the community’s pride and commitment to preserving its public spaces.

Additional improvements included the installation of new signage and a bollard, as well as the relocation of bicycle racks and the bicycle repair station to better serve trail users.

The final phase of the project will be a free Bicycle Safety and Maintenance Workshop on July 31. Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend. Watch for additional event details, or contact EBADC at ebadc68@gmail.com with any questions or for more information.
