Volunteers help serve food at the annual
community dinner sponsored by the
“Karns City Communities That Care” program.
The Karns City Communities That Care organization held its seventh annual community Thanksgiving dinner on Wednesday, November 15th at the Karns City High School. The group offered this free dinner to anyone in the community. They served over 500 meals to the community in a matter of two and half hours.
Kayla Smith, executive director of the organization, said “this is one of the many ways that we support the community.” “We offered both take out and dine in options this year to provide flexibility and convenience to our community. It’s really great to see the community come together for these events,” Smith said.
Karns City Communities That Care (CTC) was created in 2016, it is a model that aims to reduce substance abuse, improve positive youth outcomes, and make the close-knit group of towns in the Karns City Area School District a better place to live and work. They work closely with the Karns City School District and community partners to reduce risk factors for youth in the area. Some of the projects they coordinate through our schools and community are the backpack food program, evidence-based programs for students to reduce problem behaviors, increase self-esteem, decision making and problem solving, and to improve communication skills. They also have a youth group, “The Inspiring Gremlins” at Karns City High School who promote positivity through our schools, holds community activities to promote healthy behaviors, and seeks to reduce problem youth behaviors such as bullying.

“We had so many people step up this year to help and without them we couldn’t make this event happen.” The group also worked with local community members to provide meals for shut ins.
