Lynn Harrison Wellman, 71, of Albuquerque, passed away on February 19, 2026, in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

Born March 13, 1954, to parents Paul and Katherine Wellman in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Lynn lived a full life that he dedicated to public service, the environment, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Lynn studied at the University of the South (Sewanee) in Tennessee, where he earned a degree in Biology, laying the foundation for his lifelong commitment to learning. He continued his studies, earning a graduate degree in Biology from Western Kentucky University and researching plant species at Louisiana State University. Lynn’s passion for science and the natural world was a constant throughout his life.

A devoted public servant, Lynn’s professional work protected the environment and natural resources throughout a distinguished career with the State of Louisiana, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His service and contributions to these organizations reflect his belief that natural resources belong to the public and must not be exploited – one of the highlights of his career was helping to clean up the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Beyond public service, he was known to share his wisdom and expertise by helping others around him as an educator at Clayton State University, later in his career with taxpayers navigating their finances through his work at H&R Block, and, countless hours mentoring youth and volunteering with the Scouting program. Growing up, Lynn was an active Boy Scout, member of the Chi Psi fraternity, and recognized as a “Kentucky Colonel” by the state's Governor.

Known for his sharp wit, discerning intellect, and spirited sense of humor, Lynn brought great joy to those around him. His love for and dedication to science and learning are hallmarks of his character and continue to inspire those who were given the privilege of knowing him.

Lynn loved his family dearly and is survived by his sons, Jacob (36) of Denver and Eric (29) of Albuquerque, who carry forward his intellectual curiosity and love of the outdoors, and his siblings Robert Wellman, David Wellman, and Patricia Becker. Lynn leaves behind his loyal four-legged companion, Watson (15), who was a cherished part of his life. He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Katherine.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Albuquerque on February 26, 2026, from 6-8 p.m. in Lynn’s home.
