The public is invited to attend an open house to mark the 150th building anniversary of the Salem Lutheran Church at 2057 Route 208, Lamartine, PA. This open house will take place at the church on Saturday, September 20th from 11 am to 2 pm. There will be light refreshments, a slide show, memorabilia displays and a few activities for children to participate in.
The Salem Lutheran congregation was established in 1835. The first church building was erected in 1838 and was known as the Old Black Church. That building was used by many different denominations. The current church building was built in 1875 with the dedication of the building taking place on September 4th of that year. The basement of the church was constructed between 1951 and 1956 with much of the labor being donated. In 1958 renovations to the inside of the sanctuary were completed. In 2016. significant additions were made to the church to allow it to accommodate people of all abilities. A ground level entrance is now in place and an internal lift that allows access to all 3 levels of the church has been installed. Also included in this project were a large gathering area, an upstairs kitchenette, new accessible bathrooms and kitchen, an office for the pastor as well as a complete remodel of the basement.
Salem Lutheran Church is part of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and is part of the Salem and St. Paul’s Lutheran Parish. The pastor of the parish is Rev. Doug Dyson.
