Talking Tuesdays: US Steel Bald Eagles

To all the neighbors and friends of the Scrubgrass Grange, we are so pleased to share with you our new Public Service Program, “Talking Tuesdays,” which received first place for community service at this year’s 150th Pennsylvania State Grange convention in York, PA. We thank all the participants who have provided a varied spectrum of programs thus far. Our next “Talking Tuesday”, the US Steel Bald Eagles, is scheduled for November 22, at 7:00 p.m.

For the past 4 years, a family of Bald Eagles has been living on the property of the United States Steel Corporation Mon Valley Works, Irvin Plant in West Mifflin to the delight of the company. The PA Game Commission has granted US Steel permission to have them captured on live camera to safely video the birds and share them with the public. Mr. Don German, Irvin Plant manager, will present a program sharing information and stories about ”Irvin and Claire”, as the eagle couple has affectionately been named. In 2020 they successfully hatched one eaglet and in 2021 and 2022 hatched 2 eggs each year for a total of 5 eaglets.

The eggs are laid in late February or March and take about 35 - 40 days to hatch making it April when the eaglets make their appearance. All this activity is available on live cam along with the growth and activity of the family. This past year proved very interesting when the young fledglings were perched on a branch and one fell off and was injured. Thanks to the cameras and the quick response of Mr. German and the PA Game Commission, the juvenile was rescued and taken to the Tamarack Wildlife Center and rehabilitated. Rosie, as they affectionately named her after Rosie the Riveter, had injuries involving loss of tail feathers and left-wing feathers leaving her unable to fly.

Mr. German will share his passion for bald eagles, teach awareness, promote the cams and tell the bald-eagle story of the injured juvenile’s recovery and release. He will also bring a small baldeagle memento for all in attendance! Come hear the stories of the Steel City Bald Eagles.

Everyone is invited to join us for the US Steel Bald Eagle story to be presented at the Scrubgrass Grange on Tuesday, November 22, 7:00 pm, 5104, Clintonville-Emlenton Rd., Emlenton, PA 16373.
