Hear the Music. See It Come Alive.

As music becomes movement – and movement becomes music. Together, in a magical moment, they become the tango—in Foxburg’s Lincoln Hall on Saturday, September 12, at 7:30 PM.

On a late-summer evening along the Allegheny, the audience will experience the artistry of international musicians in AquiTango—including longtime ARCA audience favorites, world-renowned stride pianist Tom Roberts and violin virtuoso Maureen Conlon Gutierrez, Concertmaster of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra —joined by world-acclaimed tango dancers Mario Consiglieri and Yulia Zhukoff.

“Lincoln Hall will be transformed,” Roberts said. “It’s a magical thing—creating and making music in the moment.”

This is tango as it was meant to be experienced - with musicians and dancers listening and responding to one another… the music made visible in every shared breath, lingering phrase, sudden pause and irresistible release – up close in the intimacy of Lincoln Hall.

This concert is expressly designed for music lovers. Come simply to listen, watch and let the performance sweep you away. For those inspired to move, there will be space at the back of the hall. No dance experience is needed.

Throughout the evening, the musicians and dancers will welcome the audience into their world with stories and insights about the give-and-take of tango.

Tickets: $20 Students $5 Reserve: 724-659-3153 cash/check at door. Buy: alleghenyriverstone.org. Beer and wine sold. (Must be 21)

The musicians are stellar. Tom Roberts and Maureen Conlon Gutierrez are joined by Venezuelan bassist José Layo Puentes and Argentine-born accordionist, singer and composer Ernesto Contenti whom Roberts describes as “the heart and soul of AquiTango.”

“Ernesto Contenti is Buenos Aires Tango personified,” Roberts said. “Nobody has his combination of singing and playing plus composing tango. His voice is beyond belief—sensual and impassioned. Ernesto lives in the moment. He becomes the piece of music—and he is so inside of it, he becomes the tango.”

AquiTango’s repertoire reaches back to tango’s traditional roots with valses and the spirited rhythms of milongas including Piazzolla, the beloved “Por una Cabeza,” from the film Scent of a Woman, and original compositions by Contenti.

Making the music visible is Mario Consiglieri - a dancer, choreographer and master instructor who has been a central figure in the global tango community for more than 28 years. Celebrated for his captivating stage presence and profound understanding of movement, he’s helped shape the landscape of contemporary tango

Yulia Zhukoff is a world traveled professional tango dancer and instructor now living and teaching in Pittsburgh. A classically trained cellist, she brings a musician’s understanding of phrasing, expression, rubato and silence to her dancing.

Arrive early for a wine-and-cheese reception from 5 to 7 PM at the Red Brick Gallery exhibit pairing luminous botanical and wildlife watercolors by RBG founder and cooperative artist Donna Edmonds with hand-etched ceramics of Cheri Yarnell. All are welcome.

Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts is grateful for the generous gift of Selina-Pedi Smith and Dr. Don Smith sponsoring this concert.
